On the Light and Shadow of Life

This month has been a struggle. A frozen shoulder together with a small increase in eye pressures has meant that there have been many visits to doctors, some discomfort and a restricted capacity for activities that are usually taken for granted. Front of mind as I attend preventative laser treatment is the flash fiction piece Just Black,  by Lans Felby, from Light and Shadow anthology which considers what ‘black’ looks like from a blind person’s point of view as well as questioning those asking the question ‘What does black look like?’ of them.

My struggles are very tiny ones in the scheme of things. Many people I know are dealing with a much greater load and many  people I don’t know are suffering and struggling to survive on a daily basis. Along with little niggles there has been great joy too as writer’s copies of Light and Shadow have made their way across oceans, along roads and into mailboxes. E-certificates have been sent out too to longlisted writers and Certificates and Gifts of Recognition will be sent out in August as work on the e-book continues. The judging panel is being finalised and Places writing competition entries are being prepared for blind judging.

A light in the dark is the Words in Winter Festival which is taking place in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs in late August. For writers who love exploring the light and shadow theme Minds Shine Bright will be holding a Writing Light and Shadow with Moments of Illumination Workshop  from 3:30pm on Saturday 23rd August at Radius Arts where you can write your own piece. Come along, be inspired, discover Minds Shine Bright anthologies and create your own ‘moment of illumination.’ Joining us to read will be central Victorian writers Poppy White, Alexandra O’Sullivan and Kate Foulds. Poppy White  will read from The Shallows, Alexandra O’Sullivan will read from All the Pretty Birds, two of the stories from Light and Shadow anthology, and Kate Foulds will read flash fiction Acorn from the Confidence anthology.  There will be many wonderful literary events to enjoy over the weekend that you can find out about on the  Words in Winter Festival Program  You can register for tickets to the Minds Shine Bright Writing Light and Shadow Workshop here.

As a small  independent publisher, Minds Shine Bright is reliant on book reviews, discussions and word of mouth to help spread the word about Minds Shine Bright anthologies and to reach new readers. So next time you read one of our anthologies, please write a book review. Sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. We would really appreciate it too and would love to hear your views on Light and Shadow.
