A moment of reflection

Each organisation is listed in the region where it is based. Some organisations are national and global in their reach and others support of their local writing community. This list grows as we meet and make connections in the writing community.

The writing community organisations listed below provide tremendous support to writers worldwide on their writing journeys.

Oceania

New Zealand

  • New Zealand Writers college – offers courses, mentoring and writers’ resources. The original College was established in South Africa and now there is also a UK Writers College.
  • Michael King Writers Centre -supports New Zealand writers and promotes the development of high quality New Zealand writing. They have a program of residencies and support low cost accommodation for visiting writers.

Australia

  • Writers Victoria – connects and supports writers at all stages of their writing career
  • Geelong writers – Promoting writing and literature in Geelong and the Surf Coast
  • Geelong Regional Libraries provide library services to the Greater Geelong region with a central library and a network of community libraries.
  • Schizy Inc support the proud expression of diverse mental health through the arts including visual arts, literature,  and performing arts.
  • Arts hub a hub supporting the Australian arts community listing jobs, news, grants, events and opportunities.
  • Ballarat writers – a grass roots organization promoting local writing and writers in the Western Victorian region
  • Port Phillip library service five libraries across the City of Port Phillip..

New South Wales

  • Writers Studio – offers writing courses live in NSW and online.
  • Australian Writers’ Centre – The Australian Writer’s Centre offers courses in creative writing, copywriting, freelance writing, business writing and more. They host the Furious Fiction monthly writing competition.
  • Fellowship of Australian writers NSW The Fellowship of Australian writers founded in NSW supports and encourages Australian writers with a range of writing. resources. It also has branches in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
  • Writers NSW – support for New South Wales writers on thier writing journey including courses, seminars, workshops, writing groups and events.

Western Australia

  • writing WA – supports and creates opportunities for the writing community in Western Australia with resources for readers and writers.

Tasmania

  • TasWriters – supports and promotes Tasmanian writers and stories.

Queensland

  • Queensland Writers Centre – a community that champions writers across Queensland, helping writers at all stages of their career.

South Australia

  • Writers SA is based in South Australia and offers writers resources, workshops and events including a regional program.

Northern Territory

  • NT Writers’ Centre – supports, develops and showcases vibrant writing and storytelling in the Northern Territory

  • Reedsy – provides publishers and authors with the tools and professionals they need to craft beautiful books. They also list writing competitions.Special thanks to Reedsy for recommending Minds Shine Bright as one of their best writing contests in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025).
  • London Playwrights – resources for emerging playwrights.
  • Almond Press – an independent publisher with a regularly updated list of global writing competitions connecting writers, readers and publishers.

Bristol

  • Christopher Fielden – provides writing services and advice for writers and publishers at all levels. Lists writing competitions for short stories, poetry and flash fiction. The site also showcases short stories and books by Christopher Fielden.

  • Writing.ie – The complete online writing resource and magazine.

Norway

  • The Oslo Writers League (OWL) is an organisation for authors and writers from all over the globe, who live in the Oslo area. They are an ongoing source of mutual support, development and inspiration for writers in the Oslo area. Meetings are held monthly at the main library, Deichmanske Bjørvika.

  • Poets and Writers – the largest nonprofit organisation in the United States serving creative writers.

New Mexico

  • Duotrope is an established, award-winning resource for writers and artists. They help writers to find English language publishers or literary agents, for fiction, non-fiction and poetry in more than 40 countries

  • Kindlepreneur – a writing resource to help authors with their book marketing.

The SA Writers College offers online writing courses and writers resources. Originally based in South Africa there are now colleges in three countries, South Africa, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
